Anglesey county show..2010. Lovely weather for a change. This show is the second biggest in Wales after the Royal Welsh with around 60,000 visitors over the two days. Appaloosa classes are staged in the main ring on the first day. They are such a good showcase for the breed and I always try to attend this show. The horses are also eligable to compete in the recently added foreign breeds class earlier in the morning. I took Lucky Thirteen and her foal who took it all in her stride even the grand parade. They were the highest placed appaloosas in the foreign breed classes gaining a second prize each. Lucky was also Second in the 4yrs and over in hand appaloosa, at 16 she is a little old for this game now and according to the judge her foal was a little young this time! and was placed third.
August Thunderchief (TC) won the appaloosa youngstock class for the third year in a row and took reserve champion overall.. Very well handled by mrs Claire McMinimee.

June 2010. "August Dark Art", now aged 2 years, passes his stallion license with flying colours. Art is by "Moorhey Tomahawk" out of "August Lucky Thirteen". He is, I think the first solid colt to be licensed with the British appaloosa society. He is of super quality and will breed some true sport horse foals. He will be available for ai in due course.
Details may be obtained from Karen Paton, Meikle Obney stud, Scotland. (see links page)

June 2010. August Thunderchief (TC) Goes to his new home. He will be backed shortly and start his career under saddle next year. He started the season by winning the 3yrs & under Sport horse class at a local show.(I forgot my camera but hope to have some under saddle pics later in the year)

FEB 2010..I was contacted some time ago by House & Hound mag to give comment on PSSM in the appaloosa breed. Being woefully ignorant, I googled this and found a rather nasty genetic condition found in several breeds, the appaloosa being one of them. Having never seen symptoms of this in any of the horses I have bred I thought however it was only sensible to get Harrier and all the brood mares tested and am pleased to say that as expected, they were all FREE of both the PSSM gene and an associated gene MH which makes the condition worse.

NEWS 2009
I received a phone call just before new year 2009 from Mrs Dewson to tell me that "Little Cid" had been put down. He was foaled in 1976 so was 32 going on 33 and had a super life."CID" is Harriers great grandsire so all the horses bred here are descendants of his!!
CID

Photo is of me and "Little Spotty" out drag hunting in the 1980,s
Little Cid was by the TB stallion El Cid (Never say Die) out of a leopard spotted Irish mare. he was one of the first horses registered with the the "new" British appaloosa society in 1976, his registration number was PR/G/54
He was a terrific little performance horse (only standing 14.3) winning numerous open hunter trials, he showjumped to BSJA Foxhunter and was second in the first and only ODE we ever did out of a huge field. He hunted for several seasons with the Anglesey drag hounds and no obstacle was too big for him.He won the Baps performance award on more than one occasion and I was thrilled to be presented the award by the late Dorian Williams at The National show at Stoneleigh.
I very sadly felt I had to sell him after I became a mum myself and was working full time. He spent the latter half of his life with Graham and Ann Dewson near Whitchurch, being incredibly well loved and cared for.

Happy memories of a fabulous little horse.

It was lovely to see a mention in Horse & Hound (6:8:09) of my friend Sian Whitehead and her lovely gelding "Enzo".Sian and Enzo won both the Elementary and Novice dressage at Marian Bach EC.Both Enzo and his younger brother "Demi" are doing affiliated dressage and proving to be real stars. they are both sons of "August Arianne"who belongs to Sian's partner Peter Edwards. Peter evented Arianne until an unfortunate road accident ended her career. She is now 22 and enjoying a very happy retirement with Sian and Peter.

Last year I decided that my homebred mare "August Valkyrie" needed to have a chance to go under saddle. She went on loan to the "Anglesey Hussars" for a year and took part in a variety of activities with them. She was pictured in the "Daily Post" taking part in the "Military transport through the ages" display in Caerwys recently. The cavalry charge stole the show!!!
Many thanks to Mel and Ian Walker of the Hussars for transforming Kyrie from a super sensible brood mare to a super sensible riding horse and taking such good care of her.

Lovely to hear also from Tamara Hughes in South Wales that she is getting on so well with "Tiggy"(August Little Tiger). Tamara bought Tiggy as an unbroken three year old and has done all the work of bringing her on herself.I am so pleased they are enjoying their hacks out and beach rides.Tamara also takes part in carriage driving competitions so is a real all round horsewoman. Good Luck for the future.
